"Southern Cotton" is a painting that reflects back to a time when cotton was hand-picked and put into burlap sheets to be weighed at the end of the day.     As in many of the Locklair paintings, family members and friends re-enact the activities in order for Dona and Jerry to paint the scenes with historical accuracy.      Picking cotton by hand was phased out when tractor-driven mechanical pickers took over the operation in the 1950’s.
